New Undergrounds: Indonesian Contemporary
July 24 – August 16 2014
Fort Delta and MiFA Gallery are pleased to present their first collaborative exhibition New Underground: Indonesian Contemporary.
Featuring new work by Soni Irawan, Iyok Prayogo, and Lugas Syllabus; New Underground focuses on three prominent Indonesian artists who, until now, have not been presented in dialogue with one another.
As a group of contemporaries emerging from the Indo Punk scene, these three artists both critique and articulate a social revolution that has ensued since the Republic’s political independence from Dutch colonization at the end of 1949.
All three artists use the devices of ancestral fables as well as narratives of rebellion to explore and comment on their country’s socio-political frameworks and to critique the previous authoritarian rulers.
Now exhibited throughout the world via the international art precincts of Hong Kong and Singapore, the work of these artists amplify the socio-political changes Indonesia underwent to achieve democracy.
